GB2RS AMATEUR RADIO NEWS BROADCAST
----------------------------------
This information is prepared by the Radio Society of Great
Britain and broadcast each Sunday on the 80, 40, and 2 metre bands
by stations in all parts of the country.
This is the GB2RS news broadcast for the week commencing
Sunday, 16th November.
REPEATER NEWS.
-------------
Packet radio enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that nine out
of the planned fourteen experimental packet radio repeaters have
been cleared for operation as from 1200 GMT on Saturday 22nd
November. This will enable operators to experiment with digi-peating
through the repeaters, which will form the basis of the UK packet
network.
It is hoped that the following repeaters will be operational as
from the 22nd:-
GB3AP Dudley, West Midlands
GB3BP Bristol, Avon
GB3DB Honiton, Devon
GB3DC Weymouth, Dorset
GB3EP Exeter, Devon
GB3HP Winchester, Hampshire
GB3JP Jersey, Channel Islands
GB3NP Norwich, Norfolk
GB3UP University of Surrey, Guildford
Repeater stations at Harrogate, New Malden in Surrey,
Kingston-upon-Thames, Potters Bar and Crewe have not yet been
cleared for use, but some may be able to commence operation on
Saturday subject to clearance being received in time.
Each repeater will operate on 144.650MHz using the AX25 version
2 protocol. All will be vertically polarised, with the exception
of:-
GB3HQ at Potters Bar
GB3KP at Kingston-upon-Thames
GB3UP at Guildford, Surrey
and GB3XP at New Malden, Surrey
which will use horizontal polarisation.
The fourteen stations form part of a short term experiment due
to finish at the end of 1987. The experiment will provide an
opportunity to learn about packet radio and its operation prior to
the planning of a permanent UK packet radio network.
MORSE TEST NEWS.
---------------
Here are details of Morse tests to be held in January 1987. The
test dates will be given in batches according to the date by which
completed application forms must be received at RSGB HQ.
10th January Binstead, Isle of Wight
Winchester, Hampshire
Belfast, County Antrim
11th January Rhydyfelin, nr. Pontypridd, Mid-Glamorgan
Bletchley, Buckinghamshire
13th January Stirling, Central Scotland
14th January Clay Cross, Chesterfield, Derbyshire
15th January Luton, Bedfordshire
Sheffield, South Yorkshire
17th January Liskeard, Cornwall
Application forms for tests at the above centres must be
received at RSGB HQ by 13th December.
19th January Telford, Shropshire
20th January Penarth, South Glamorgan
Huyton, Liverpool, Merseyside
Application forms for tests at the above centres must be
received at RSGB HQ by 19th December.
Finally, two corrections to last week's list. Tests at
Chesterton, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire will take place on
14th December and not on the 13th as previously stated. Glasgow's
test date, given last week as 21st December is in fact 15th
December.
LICENSING NEWS
--------------
The Society recently approached the DTI in order to clarify
future arrangements for CEPT licensing. At the moment the UK has not
adopted the CEPT recommendation for a common form of European
licence. For the time being all normal reciprocal arrangements
remain in force. We do, however, have a special unilateral agreement
with West Germany which is similar to the CEPT proposal and which
has replaced the previous reciprocal arrangements.
Although not a part of the CEPT agreement, this new arrangement
does permit UK licence holders to operate from within West Germany
without the need to apply to West Germany for permission. Instead,
the DTI will on request issue a letter of authority, the terms of
which have been agreed with the West Germans. All operation under
the terms of this letter is subject to conditions applied to West
German radio amateurs.
It is the visitor's own responsibility to obtain the letter of
authority from the DTI. He must also obtain information from the
West German PTT regarding operating arrangements.
The DTI intends to make changes to the UK licence, hopefully
during 1987. These will enable UK amateurs to operate without first
obtaining a reciprocal licence in those countries which have adopted
the CEPT recommendation. The same arrangements will apply to
European amateurs visiting this country. Once adopted, this system
is eventually expected to replace most current European reciprocal
licensing agreements.

14.300MHz phone. The net, which takes place on alternate weekends,
begins on Friday evening and continues into Saturday morning. More
details can be obtained from G0EGA, who is QTHR.
SPECIAL EVENT STATIONS
----------------------
The time for the BBC's annual Children in Need appeal is
drawing close once again. York RAYNET group will be running a
special event station GB2CIN at York Minster from 17th November to
the 21st. Operation will be on a wide variety of bands.
Here is a correction to the item in last week's news concerning
the operation of A4XND in the Sultanate of Oman. The fee for the
Royal Omani Amateur Radio Society's 16th National Day Award is ten
IRCs or their equivalent, not two as given in last week's script.
The latest callsigns issued as of Wednesday 12th November were
in the G0GC and G1WK series.
SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
------------------
The period 1st to 6th November has seen solar activity
maintaining a moderate level, though the intensity of events is
tending to decline. The sunspot count is now in the forty to fifty
region. The solar flux has declined, from 91 on the 1st, to 80 by
the 6th, but these are still very good levels, all factors
considered.
The geomagnetic A index was quiet until the 3rd, then a sudden
magnetic storm with an A index of 48 developed on the 4th. This was
followed by considerable solar wind particle input. It is not yet
known whether a northern aurora resulted, though it is very likely
to have done so. The period averaged 19 units, the highest level
since the big auroras of last February. At present the cause of such
an event is not known.
Meteor shower activity is expected on the 17th and 18th.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND AND WALES)
------------------------------------
Over the period the F2 critical frequencies were up to 8.4MHz
by the 3rd of November. The magnetic storm of the 4th then reduced
ionospheric levels by almost half, to 4.8MHz. Nine hours of total
absorption were recorded at Appleton, rather putting paid to the
ionosphere.
Levels are slowly recovering and by the 6th were up to 5.4MHz.
The darkness hour lows are varying on a day to day basis, but are
averaging 1.9MHz, with seasonal changes slowly reducing levels, as
we would expect.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND AND NORTHERN IRELAND)
-----------------------------------------------
Over the period the northern ionosphere has been affected each
day during darkness hours by total absorption. This has lasted for
up to nine hours on occasions. The only reasonable day was the 3rd,
with a daylight F2 critical frequency of 6.8MHz. The period only
averaged 5.9MHz. The darkness hour levels are still averaging 1.6MHz
and have been steady for the past five weeks. Absorption and spread
F is a problem during the early morning period.
The recent increase in solar activity has unfortunately
contributed to ionospheric disruption without compensation in the
form of higher MUFs for northern contacts.
SOLAR FORECAST
--------------
With rapid changes taking place on the sun, forecasting is at
present more like guesswork. Assuming a repeat of previous patterns,
we can expect a drop in geomagnetic levels as the week progresses,
with a general improvement in the ionosphere as the more active side
of the sun rotates into view.
For the south, MUFs could well be high enough to support 21MHz
band working, particularly towards the end of the week. Darkness
hour levels may be as high as 7MHz on some days.
For the north, the geomagnetic disturbance is expected to
decline, with more stable ionospheric conditions resulting. MUFs may
be up in the region of 20MHz but towards the end of the week even
21MHz might be reached. Night time levels are not expected to
change. MUFs should remain in the region of 5.5MHz but spread F
could take its toll.
